South Africa are closing in on victory in the first Test after Dale Steyn destroyed India with seven first-innings wickets in Nagpur.

After the Proteas had declared on 558-6, Steyn took 7-51 as India were forced to follow-on after being dismissed for just 233 in their first innings, despite a century from Virender Sehwag.

The hosts then limped to 66-2 in their second innings and will face a battle for survival on day four, as they still trail by 259 runs with just eight wickets intact.

The Indians began the day on 25 without loss but soon lost Gautam Gambhir to Morne Morkel (1-58) for just 12.

Steyn then took out Murali Vijay (4) and Sachin Tendulkar (7) before Subramaniam Badrinath (56) and Sehwag put together a partnership of 136.

Any thoughts that India might get up somewhere near the visitor's total were soon dispelled as Wayne Parnell dismissed Sehwag for 109 and Steyn returned to run through the middle and lower order.

And the right-arm quickie was at it again second time around, with the wicket of Sehwag for just 16 as India followed on.

Morkel bowled Gambhir for just a single and India will need a 'Tendulkar special' to dig then out of their current predicament and save the game.
