R's set for Eagles swoop

C PalaceQPR boss Iain Dowie is set to test Crystal Palace's determination to keep hold of midfielder Ben Watson.

Watson still has 12 months to go on his present deal at Selhurst Park but big spending Rangers are apparently ready to make a move for the England under-21-star.

Eagles assistant boss Mick Jones stated the club's desire to keep the playmaker two weeks ago.

He said: "Neil Warnock rates Ben very highly but it's not sensible for any club to allow a player to run down their last year.

"Neil has spoken to Ben and told him he is in his long-term plans but it follows that we want to negotiate a longer contract."
