Neil Warnock says Shaun Derry's off the field work with the team was the reason behind his appointment as Crystal Palace captain.
The Eagles boss has been pondering who would take the armband this coming term following Mark Hudson's departure for London rivals Charlton on a free transfer at the end of last season. And, despite Clint Hill, Matt Lawrence and Paddy McCarthy all in the frame, Warnock opted for Derry, who rejoined the club last November following a spell at Leeds.
Warnock told the Croydon Advertiser: "Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on which way you look at it, I think we've got three or four great captains at the club.
"But I just think Shaun has been more involved off the field, I've spoken to him a few times about things and I think he is just the type that we need, particularly with the youngsters."
