Defender challenged to extend deal

DerbyDerby boss Paul Jewell has challenged Darren Powell to win a long contract at the club after he signed on for two months.

Jewell has signed the 32-year-old until the end of January to give him more options at the back and he believes the veteran can earn himself a longer deal if his form warrants it.

"He trained with us on Wednesday and everything is agreed," Jewell told the Telegraph.

"Darren has been at Charlton for a while and they want to sign him but, luckily enough, we got the nod on him and have signed him.

"It gives us a bit of cover. It probably suits both parties. We can have a look at him and he can have a look at us.

"But if he comes and does well, he can earn himself a contract to the end of the season. Hopefully he will do well and get something longer."
