Sheffield Wednesday have re-signed striker Luke Varney on loan from Derby until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has previously enjoyed two loan stints at Hillsborough in which time he has scored six goals in 18 starts.

Alan Irvine is hoping his arrival can help the Owls extend their unbeaten run under the new manager as they battle to beat the drop in the Championship.

Irvine said: "Luke Varney is a player that I have admired very much since he started his league career at Crewe."He has a tremendous work ethic and the right attributes that I seek in a player. Luke has already proved himself a very popular player during his two loan spells so far with Sheffield Wednesday and I am delighted to welcome him back to the club for the rest of the season."

Varney has struggled to make an impact at Pride Park since his £1m move from Charlton and it would appear he isn't rated by Rams boss Nigel Clough.

He won't however, be able to play against Derby when the two sides faces each other in March.
