Several clubs showed an interest, including Bradford City, Leicester City, Doncaster Rovers and Swansea, but he has opted to stay in the Championship with the Tykes.
He joined Derby from West Brom in January 2006 and made 89 appearances, scoring five goals and was last season's player of the year.
Davey said: "We have been looking to increase competition at the back and have brought in a player with a proven pedigree.
"Darren has won promotion four times from the Championship during his career. We are delighted to have persuaded him to join up despite interest from a lot of other clubs."
