The 31-year-old has played for 11 clubs during his 14-year career, with 85 league goals, eight of these came last season. Byfield may not be the most prolific of strikers but does have experience in the higher leagues appearing for Aston Villa, Walsall, Millwall and Bristol City which boss Sean O'Driscoll believes could prove invaluable in the Championship.
"The way it works you get a CV sent on an e-mail or fax and I've got hundreds of them and so has every manager in the Championship and Darren was one of those on a free transfer who has played in the Championship," said Sean O'Driscoll.
"So you do what you have to do and speak to the agent and assess the situation.
"At this minute in time he's talking to various clubs and is available and that's as far as we've got."
O'Driscoll hopes Byfield will be playing at the Keepmoat Stadium next season and that he will still retains enough enthusiasm to help Rovers in the Championship.
