Boss Peter Houston has brought forward his departure and has left Dundee United by mutual consent with immediate effect.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Houston was going to leave his position at Tannadice at the end of the season when his contract expired, having rejected a reduced-terms deal from chairman Stephen Thompson.

Having taken over from Craig Levein in 2009, he guided United to only their second ever Scottish Cup success a few months later, in a 3-0 win over Ross County at Hampden Park.

The club issued a statement on the departure of Houston, stating: "He leaves with the thanks of everyone at the club and best wishes for the future."

The 54-year-old has recently been linked with the Blackpool manager's job, which is still vacant following Michael Appleton departure earlier this month.

He leaves Tannadice with the side seventh in the SPL and on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Ross County.
