Everton's hopes of landing Ajax centre-half Toby Alderweireld have taken a knock, as Spartak Moscow are understood to have made a bid.
The Belgium defender is wanted by the Russian giants as they, like Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park, look to add to their defensive options and see his versatility as a major plus.
The centre half, who can also operate at right back, is said to be keen on a move to a Premier League club if they are big enough, with Tottenham also understood to be keen.
Alderweireld is thought to have turned down a move to Norwich earlier in the summer, after the two clubs agreed a fee but he couldn't settle on personal terms.
If Everton are to follow up their interest, they will need to make an early soon in an attempt to offer another alternative to Spartak, with the prospect of Premier League football in their favour.
