Everton eye Cologne hitman

Last Updated: Mon, 20 Mar 2017 11:16

An Everton scout saw Cologne striker Anthony Modeste hit a hat-trick on Saturday - days after he was tipped to replace Romelu Lukaku.

The 28-year-old striker, who flopped during a loan spell at Blackburn in 2012, is in the running to win the European golden boot and has scored more Bundesliga goals this season than Robert Lewandowski and Javier Hernandez.

Reports on Merseyside last week suggested Modeste is one of seven potential replacements for Lukaku - should the 21-goal striker quit Everton this summer.

The Belgian hitman bagged a brace against Hull City on Saturday after seemingly questioning the club's ambition.

Everton were not the only English club to scout Cologne's 4-2 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday, with spies from Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Derby also there.
