Everton progress on defender talks

Last Updated: Wed, 15 Jan 2014 09:43

Everton are said to be making steady progress in their talks with left-back Leighton Baines as they try to get him to sign a new deal.

The England defender is wanted by former boss David Moyes at Manchester United and they are thought to have made successive bids last summer for his services but Everton are increasingly confident the 29-year-old will sign a long-term deal at Goodison.

Baines has 18 months on his current deal left to run and the club are keen to get him tied down to a new contract which would effectively see him spend the rest of his career at Goodison Park.

The talks are expected to progress into the summer by which time manager Roberto Martinez may have guided the team into the Champions League places, possibly at the expense of Moyes' United.
