Everton midfielder James McCarthy insists he was "over the moon" to secure a move from Wigan before the end of the transfer window.
Everton's move for the Republic of Ireland international looked to be dead in the water after Latics chairman Dave Whelan revealed he would accept no less than £13million, turning down an initial offer of £8million.
However, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez was keen to ensure he had the services of the 20-year-old at Goodison Park and made a late swoop, meeting the asking price and finalising the deal.
The former Hamilton man revealed that he was unsure whether the deal would go through but admits he was delighted to hear the news.
McCarthy said: To be honest I am over the moon. The last few hours have been nerve-racking and I am delighted to be here.
"Once I knew Everton were interested there was no going back - I wanted to come here and try and establish myself.
"I worked under the manager for four years at Wigan, they were four brilliant years. I loved every minute of that. I know some of the boys who are here so it was a no-brainer to be honest."
