Moyes close to deal as chief departs

EvertonDavid Moyes says he is close to signing a new contract at Everton as chief executive Keith Wyness has resigned from his post.

Toffees boss Moyes has been expected to put pen to paper on the deal for several months, but the Scot admits the job of team strengthening this summer has left it on the backburner.

However, speaking in the United States ahead of Everton's friendly clash with Chicago Fire on Wednesday, he said: "Hopefully in the next week or so I will get it tied down and get it done."

He added: "I want the best for Everton and I do not want to let the players down.

"I have told them that there will be more players coming to help them along the way. I want to make sure that is done before anything else.

"That is more important to me just now. But it is very close."

Meanwhile, Wyness has surprisingly quit his position at Goodison Park just as the club are pressing on with their plans to relocate to a new 50,000-seater stadium in Kirkby which he has been instrumental in.

The Toffees have secured planning permission but Wyness was concerned that central government would have the plans 'called in' for further examination which he said would have held up the whole project for the foreseeable future.

It is reported that Wyness could be about to link up in a similar role with Spanish outfit Real Mallorca, while Everton would only confirm his exit.

A short one-sentence statement on their official website read: "Everton Football Club wishes to announce that Keith Wyness has resigned his position as chief executive officer and director of the club."
