Manchester United are reported to be planning a £12million swoop for Everton youngster Jack Rodwell this summer.

The Reds have long been linked with a move for Rodwell, who has come through the Everton ranks, and reports now claim an offer will be made when the window re-opens in the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already snapped up Fulham starlet Chris Smalling who will arrive at Old Trafford in the summer and it is thought the Scot wants to link him up with Rodwell.

The 18-year-old can play in midfield and defence and has also attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal. Everton want to keep hold and have the player under contract until 2013/14 but their resolve could be tested in the summer.

Rodwell has been out of the Everton side since December with a hamstring injury but Ferguson has seen enough of him to prompt a summer raid.
