Everton are set to sign former Benfica and Manchester City youngster Francisco Santos Silva Junior on a free transfer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 20-year-old could complete a move to Goodison Park this week once paperwork issues have been resolved.

The defensive midfielder began his career with Benfica before a short spell with Manchester City's elite development squad.

However, despite playing a number of friendlies and reserve team fixtures he struggled to break into the first-team picture at the Etihad and is now a free agent, meaning he can sign outside of the transfer window.

With the Toffees set to lose on-loan midfielder Landon Donovan back to LA Galaxy after next weekend, Junior could provide a timely boost to boss David Moyes' thin squad heading into the final third of the season.
