Unhappy Moyes tipped to axe defender

EvertonLeighton Baines is reportedly set to be shown the Everton exit door despite boss David Moyes bemoaning his lack of strength in depth.

Baines, who joined in a £6million switch from Wigan last summer, struggled with injury last term and only made 13 Premier League appearances for the Toffees as Joleon Lescott deputised successfully in the left-back role.

As a result it is being claimed that Moyes will now listen to offers for the 23-year-old former England Under-21 international, who at one time attracted interest from Arsenal and Manchester United following an exceptional first Premier League season with Wigan in 2005-06.

The news comes as a surprise given that on Thursday, Moyes admitted his squad is well short of quality senior players following a friendly defeat to MLS side Chicago Fire - their third loss in five pre-season outings. With Andrew Johnson set to move to Fulham for over £10million, his main aim is to bring new faces in before the Premier League season gets underway against Blackburn in a fortnight.

Moyes said: "We're a long way away from being where we think we're going to be. That's due to several circumstances.

"But some of the players aren't playing well. Some of them need to start looking at themselves and getting their performances sorted, but because we haven't got any competition for places it's a little bit easy for them.

"It's a big concern that the season is only two weeks away because we don't have enough players to cope with what we have got right now."
