Manchester United's interest in Leighton Baines may have cooled after it emerged they are now keen on Southampton's Luke Shaw.
Red Devils boss David Moyes has identified Everton left-back Baines as the man he would like to come into Old Trafford to challenge Patrice Evra for a first-team jersey in this coming season.
However, Blues boss Roberto Martinez has told the champions that any more bids for Baines and his Toffees' team-mate Marouane Fellaini in this transfer window would be "a waste of time" because he is not willing to sell.
Moyes has drawn up a list of alternative options and it appears Saints' 18-year-old Shaw would be the next target if the Scot gives up on Baines.
Shaw, who signed a new five-year contract at St Mary's last month and featured in his side's 1-0 win at West Brom on Saturday in their Premier League opener, looks set to be a regular in boss Mauricio Pochettino's plans this season.
And, despite the Saints splashing around £35million on new signings this summer, they do not need to sell and will almost certainly fight to keep £10million-rated Shaw at the club.
