Massa was looking in good shape but an incident in the pits when he drove off with a fuel hose still attached put paid to any hopes of gaining any points from the race.
After an incident-packed season to date for the McLaren driver, Hamilton was pleased that he steered clear of any trouble and was able to finish the race intact and add to his points tally.
"Mine was a pretty straightforward race," he said. "I was pushing Nico (Rosberg) until three laps from the end but I wasn't going to pass so I just wanted to bring it home.
"Unless you're three or four seconds faster than the guy in front, you're really stuck. I could see the guys in front just pulling away.
"I didn't really know Felipe was out of the points. I didn't really focus on it - I just focused on my race and scoring those points."
Renault's Fernando Alonso won the race with Rosberg second but it was the young Brit who benefited the most, extending his lead in the standings to seven points over Brazilian Massa.
