Heikki Kovalainen came home in second but Hamilton still leads the championship by one point because Ferrari's Felipe Massa could only manage a sixth-place finish. The Briton did his best to tear through the field as he ended the race in seventh place after starting in 15th on the grid.
Robert Kubica's tactics of using just one stop paid off as the BMW driver finished third following an 11th-place grid start while Fernando Alonso was fourth.
Nick Heidfield's BMW was fifth ahead of Massa and Hamilton while Marc Webber in the Red Bull Renault claimed the final points position coming home in eighth.
It was 21-year-old Vettel, though, who earned the plaudits afterwards as he led from start to finish and he described his victory as 'unbelievable'.
The youngster said: "The whole race we had no problems. The car was working fine. It was a fantastic race, a very good strategy but all that was gone when I crossed the finish line.
"The lap back to the pits and the whole podium ceremony was just unbelievable. For sure it is the best day of my life. These pictures, the emotions, I will never forget."
