Europe's carmakers have warned the FIA that a breakaway series could be formed if the objectives of the Formula One teams are not met.

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (Acea) are backing the Formula One teams in the row with the FIA, which principally surrounds the controversial voluntary $40 million budget cap, set to be begin from next season.

Acea, whose members include BMW, Porsche and Renault said: "The FIA needs modernised and transparent governance and processes, including the revision of its constitution.

"The current governance system (by the FIA) cannot continue."

The relationship between the teams and F1 chief Max Mosley have been strained ever since Mosley announced details of the budget cap earlier this year, with many teams threatening to boycott Formula One next season.

The Formula One Teams Association (Fota) said: "Regrettably, Fota is being forced to outline in detail its objections to the new arbitrary FIA proposals.

"We will release details of our concerns in the near future which will constructively explain why the FIA's proposals are bad for the future of F1, the jobs of those employed within the motor-racing industry and the millions of loyal fans who are dismayed and confused at the internal bickering within our sport."

All ten current F1 teams have been included on the list of entrants for next season though eight of them, including Ferrari, McClaren and Renault, applied on the condition that the budget cap is altered or waived.
