Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel finished just ahead of Jenson Button to take pole position in the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul.
The 21-year-old recorded a superb time of one minute 28.316 seconds with time running out in Saturday's qualifying to edge Championship leader Button into second.
Button's team-mate Rubens Barrichello was third in qualifying ahead of Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, who was fourth fastest with Toyota's Jarno Trulli starting Sunday's race from fifth on the grid.
German Vettel admitted he was relieved to secure pole after recovering from mechanical problems on Friday.
"I'm very pleased, we've been pushing hard for the last few qualifying sessions, and finally we made it," he said.
"We had an engine failure yesterday, so we were not able to do a lot of laps, but I still had a good feeling about today.
"It's been a great job in the factory - some of the parts arrived at the last minute so it was quite an effort to fix them to the car, but they worked."
