The former Norwich City midfielder, who joined the Black Cats a year ago, made 20 Premier League appearances for the club in a campaign which ended prematurely due to injury. It is not thought that Sunderland boss Roy Keane is looking to offload Etuhu, but if the right price was offered he could be tempted to balance the books slightly after spending big money on four players already this summer.
Indeed with Keane still on the hunt for a striker there are also claims that Hodgson will offer his Black Cats counterpart Northern Ireland striker David Healy as part of a swap deal in a bid to land Etuhu.
