Fulham are in the running to sign Dutch midfielder Boudewijn Zenden after he was told he was surplus to requirements at Marseille.

The Cottagers have tabled an offer to the 32-year-old ex-Liverpool and Chelsea star who has a black belt in judo.

Zenden helped Marseille to second place in the French top flight last term, but has been told his contract will not be renewed.

Speaking to newspaper Provence, he said: "I lived in Marseilles for two great years, with ups and downs. [President] Pape Diouf explained to me that I weighed on the budget of the club and that [manager] Didier Deschamps had other priorities.

"I understand, I know football and I am not bitter towards Marseille."
