Fulham in for midfielder

FulhamWest Ham lead the race to sign Reading midfielder James Harper but face a battle with Fulham and Bolton for his services.

Although Harper has made it clear he will not demand a move from the Madejski Stadium, it is almost certain the Royals will sell him this summer as Steve Coppell prepares a squad for life in the Championship.

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is expected to make a few changes in the middle at Upton Park and wants to add the £3m-rated midfielder to his ranks if possible.

Both Bolton and Fulham, who more than flirted with relegation last season, have also been linked with a move for the player who says he is prepared to stay at Reading if a move does not come off.

Harper admitted last week: "I won't pretend I don't want to be playing in the Premier League, but I'm more than happy to stay here next season.

"I don't want to be in the Championship, but Reading are so I am prepared to come back for pre-season, graft and fight for the shirt and that's the way it should be."
