Schwarzer refuses to play second fiddle

FulhamFulham new boy Mark Schwarzer has revealed the thought of sitting on the bench made him reject the chance of moving to Juventus.

The 35-year-old has brought his 11-year career at Middlesbrough to an end and signed for west London outfit Fulham, after rejecting the chance of a new deal at the Riverside.

The Australian international keeper had attracted interest from both Juventus and Bayern Munich but rejected both the European giants to move to the side who narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship on the final day of the Premiership season.

And he revealed that he opted to snub the Italians as he is keen to continue playing and not just be the number two at a club in the twilight years of his career.

"There were offers on the table but the only thing that mattered to me was regular first-team football," he said on Sky Sports News.

"And obviously someone like Juventus you don't have to be Einstein to work out that you have Buffon there and it is very unlikely you are going to play too many games under Buffon as he is such a world-class keeper.

"And with Bayern Munich it was a similar situation with their goalkeeping situation.

"I want to qualify for the next World Cup and hopefully be part of that so I had to go somewhere I would be considered No.1."
