Following the nightmare start, Chopra went bogey-free for the remainder of his penultimate round, picking up shots at the second, sixth, seventh, tenth and 18th as he carded a four-under-round of 68.
Meanwhile, Watson also enjoyed the day as he was bogey free with a 68 himself while Austin was only a solitary shot worse in round three with a 69.
The overnight leader Bo Van Pelt shot a 73 which leaves him in a share of fifth alongside the in-form Kenny Perry going into the final round.
Chopra, who chasing a third career PGA Tour victory, knows a win will fire him into Ryder Cup contention and says he is feeling no pressure being out in front.
"Everybody says it's tough to play with a lead, but we try to get a lead, and two shots is better than one, and three is better than two," he said. "So the bigger the lead you've got, the better.
"It just gives that you little bit of a cushion to allow yourself that one extra hole where maybe you should have made a birdie on that you expected to make birdie and if you don't, it gives you that extra one hole of patience."
