Goggin takes early Memorial lead

GolfMatthew Goggin leads the Memorial tournament after day one with Luke Donald and Justin Rose also making strong starts.

Australian Goggin, playing for the first time at the event, fired eight birdies and just one bogey in beautiful conditions for a fine seven-under-par 65 to take the early lead at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Americans Kenny Perry, who had a run of six consecutive birdies, and Jerry Kelly finished one shot off the pace after rounds of 66, with Brett Quigley and Rod Pampling a further shot back.

Donald followed up his third at Wentworth with an opening 68 to finish in a share of sixth place, along with fellow Englishman Rose.

Rose was particularly pleased with his efforts as he had missed the last three cuts.

"I haven't played well the past few weeks but my attitude's the best it's ever been," said the 2007 European number one. "It was probably one of the most enjoyable rounds I've had this year.

"It feels like the last few weeks, every course has been very, very tough, probably because I wasn't playing great.

"In that respect, this has come out of the blue but I've been working hard, so it hasn't come out of the blue."
