Martin Kaymer admitted his goal for the season is to make the Ryder Cup team after winning the Abu Dhabi Championship by one shot.
The German star led Englishman Ian Poulter by one shot overnight and the pair were locked together on 20-under-par coming down the last. But the 25-year-old held his nerve to secure a birdie to Poulter's par and claim the title in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The pair had been close throughout the final round but Poulter's wayward tee shot on the 72nd hole meant he could only make a par and had to settle for second place, with Northern Ireland's McIlroy a shot further back in third.
Kaymer is one of the bright young prospects on the European Tour and he revealed that he is already halfway to achieving one goal this season, with bigger things on his mind as the year progresses.
"My goal for every year is to win two tournaments on the European Tour," he said. "I did it in 2008 and 2009 and I hope I can do it this year.
"But my main goal is to play the Ryder Cup this year because when I went there two years ago I really felt I want to be there one day because it is so cool.
"Even though I wasn't playing, it gave me so much experience and it helped me so much.
"My goals for the future are to have two wins on the European Tour each year, to play better in the big events and try to play the Ryder Cup.
"I've been in contention a few times already in my career over the last three years. My first win was difficult and my second win in Germany was very difficult. Now it has changed a little bit."
