Lefty on top at Colonial

GolfPhil Mickelson takes a one-shot lead into the final day of the Crowne Plaza Invitational after a five-under-par penultimate-round 65.

The world number two sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the last to go a solitary shot clear of Rod Pampling and Stephen Ames at the top of the leaderboard.

Mickelson's round included seven birdies and two dropped shots moving him to 12-under-par in total.

Pampling and Ames will still feel they are in with a great shout of success later today while South Africa's Tim Clark currently lies a further two shots back on -9 in fourth.

Pampling enjoyed a superb third round as he carded 63 and in doing so moved firmly into contention for his first PGA Tour success in over two years. However, he could have been entering the final day at the summit of the leaderboard but for bogeys at the 16th and 17th.

Meanwhile, Ames got off to a flier with three birdies in the opening four holes of his third round before progressing steadily to eventually complete a 64.

Alex Cejka is the leading European on four under while Ian Poulter lies a further shot back.
