Mixed emotions for Westwood

GolfLee Westwood had mixed feelings after seeing his chance of US Open glory slip away at the 72nd hole.

The Englishman, along with Tiger Woods, had a putt on the final green at Torrey Pines to take his place in an 18-hole play-off on Monday and a chance to pick up his first major title at the age of 35.

However, his putt fell short and he had to settle for third place, as Woods holed his to set up a shoot-out with compatriot Rocco Mediate later today.

The Worksop-born star was disappointed to get so close to an extra 18 holes but felt he had proved to his doubters that he does have it in him to mix it with the best in the sport.

"While I'm disappointed, I'm pleased with myself," he said. "I think that I've proved to myself and a few others that there is a major championship in me.

"It's sickening not to be in the play-off but all in all I played pretty well all week.

"If somebody had said 'you're going to have a chance from 20 feet for a play-off', I would probably have taken that at the start of the tournament."
