Monty calls for Ryder extension

GolfColin Montgomerie has proposed that the Ryder Cup be extended for a further day to combat the weather and longer courses.

The Ryder Cup legend believes that cramming the team tournament into three days is not necessary, particularly with the unpredictability of the weather and the fact that courses are now longer to make it difficult for the big hitters in the world game.

"To get everything done in three days isn't necessary. We seem to be rushing around and for what reason?" he said.

"It's almost got to that stage where two rounds a day over three days is just a rush."

The venue for the next Ryder Cup in Europe is Celtic Manor, which has a history of bad weather, and play at the Wales Open currently being held at the course was halted on day one because of fog.

"There is a river here and the temperature between rivers and land cause fog," Monty added.

"We risked it in Ireland where we were close to a delay and we just got away with it. There could be delays here and we pray him upstairs is good to us.

"To get people around twice in places that are this vast and this large is getting harder and it would make sense to play it over four days.

"But I think everyone would benefit from a longer tournament, advertisers, supporters and the media so it should be possibility."
