Poulter hopes to push on

GolfIan Poulter said he was determined to kick on after his final round of 69 secured him second place at the Open.

The 32-year-old ended the Royal Birkdale tournament seven over, four adrift of winner Padraig Harrington, and felt he had given a good account of himself.

"There is plenty more in me and I know I can go better," said Poulter, whose previous best at a Major was tied ninth at the 2006 USPGA. "I don't think I've enjoyed a week as much as I have this one.

"I am fairly happy with how I played and I will take a lot of confidence."

Poulter said he hopes his finish would give him a push ahead of the Ryder Cup and was also quick to praise Harrington, who struck a back nine of 32, including an eagle on 17, to successfully defended his crown.

"I hope that this will springboard me on for a massive push before the Ryder Cup side is picked," added Poulter.

"Hats off to Padraig. Winning back-to-back Opens is very impressive and that shot he hit into 17 was awesome."
