Quartet lead the way in Munich

GolfAustralia's Peter O'Malley is among a quartet of players leading the BMW International Open in Munich by one shot on six-under-par.

O'Mally, who is chasing his first European Tour victory since the 2001 Open, fired a bogey-free first round of six birdies to finish on 66 alongside South Africa's Anton Haig, Singapore's Mardan Mamat and Rafa Echenique of Argentina.

English duo Mark Foster and David Lynn are amongst another five players one shot back on five under, while veteran Scot Colin Montgomerie is two under alongside England's Paul Casey after a mixed round of five birdies and three bogeys. Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Retief Goosen of South Africa are well placed just ahead of them on three under.

John Daly, who holds the tournament record for lowest score with his 2001 winning total of 27-under-par 261, carded a 72 after two double bogeys, a bogey and two birdies in the space of five holes.

"I just got some bad breaks. What can you do?" he said. "I am hitting better than I am scoring."
