Steve Stricker admitted it felt "good" after claiming his first title since 2007 with victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
The 42-year-old shot 68 for his final round to finish tied with overnight leader Tim Clark of South Africa and fellow American Steve Marino on 17-under-par.
Stricker then took the title with a birdie at the second sudden-death extra hole to claim his first success for almost two years.
The Europeans fared well in Texas with England's Paul Casey finishing two shots back in fifth after a final-round 66, while Ian Poulter shot 68 to end up 12-under and Luke Donald was a further two shots back following a level-par round of 70 at Colonial.
But the day belonged to 2008 Ryder Cup star Stricker, who felt it was high time he took the top prize after some near misses in recent times.
"Finally I was able to chip one in here and make birdie," he said. "It feels really good.
"I feel fortunate, I've been on the other end a couple times this year where you feel going to win and end up losing. This feels very good."
