Tiger on course for Open

GolfTiger Woods leads going into the final day of the US Open with Lee Westwood just one-shot behind him.

The world number one shot a round of 70 to reach three under, including two eagles in his last six holes, to go into the fourth day of the open with a slender lead. The history books show that Woods has never failed to clinch an open when he has led going into the final day of a tournament.

The 32-year-old played some brilliant strokes, including a monster 60ft putt at the 13th after a wayward drive left him in the rough to secure an eagle three.

He continued his good form around the back nine with a chipped birdie from the rough on the 17th before another lengthy putt on the 18th for an eagle three as he came from behind to overhaul Westwood's lead.

Westwood is looking to become the first Englishman to win a US Open title since 1970 after an excellent round of 70 left him two under par.

Long-time third-round leader Rocco Mediate finds himself a further stroke back with 2006's champion Geoff Ogivly and American DJ Trahan another shot adrift.

Second round leader Stuart Appleby had a bad though as he slipped off the pace with a round of 79 whilst local boy Phil Mickelson had an even worse day with a quadruple-bogey nine at the 13th as he ended the day nine over.
