Wonderful Weir opens three-shot lead

Canadian Mike Weir fired a sensational 10-under-par 61 to open a three-shot lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

It was a career-best round for the 38-year-old left-hander, who carded 10 birdies in a flawless round which equalled the course record at TPC Boston.

The former Masters champion was in sensational form on the greens but could not explain how is putter has become so hot.

"There was no indication on the putting green warming up that was going to tell me it was going to be like that," he said. "It was just one of those days where I made about a 15-footer on the first hole and another on the second hole, and then I had about eight feet on the third hole, and it looked easy after the first two."

Weir now lies three shots clear of Vijay Singh, John Merrick, Briny Baird and Heath Slocum in the second event of the FedEx Cup play-offs.

US Ryder Cup debutant Ben Curtis lies a further shot off the pace at -6 alongside compatriot Eric Axley, while Ernie Els is in a group one shot back.

Sergio Garcia and Sweden's Carl Petterson are at -4, while the English duo of Paul Casey and Ian Poulter are at -3 and -1 respectively.
