Woods looking for improvement

Tiger Woods is aware that there are improvements to be made despite a solid start to his PGA Tour campaign at Pebble Beach.

The former world number one fired six birdies in his opening round at the National Pro-Am in California on his first appearance at the event for 10 years to share 15th place at four-under-par.

Woods lies five shots behind leaders Danny Lee, Charlie Wi and Dustin Johnson, but his performance reads better as he was playing his first round on what is considered the most difficult of the three courses - at Spyglass Hill.

The American has shown signs of returning to his better form of late, particularly in Australia and Dubai, as changes to his swing are starting to take effect.

However, it was his iron play that let him down on Thursday and he is looking to improve on that in his second round.

"I feel comfortable because of my practice sessions," Woods told the PGA Tour official website. "I'm able to actually practice, which I hadn't been able to for a very long time.

"I drove it great; unfortunately didn't do a very good job getting it to the greens.

"[Friday] will be an important day to put it together and make some birdies."

Woods carded the fourth best score at Spyglass Hill behind Kevin Na and Nick Watney, who both shot 66s, and Bob Estes, who carded a 67.

Johnson and Lee both set their first-round leading benchmarks at Pebble Beach, while Wi fired a round of 61 at Monterey Peninsula CC.
