Woods says Torrey Pines win is his 'best'

GolfTiger Woods believes his dramatic US Open sudden-death playoff win over Rocco Mediate capped the greatest tournament of his career.

Woods battled knee trouble for five days to clinch his third US Open title on the 91st hole at Torrey Pines last night and labelled it his best ever win.

"I think this is the best, just because of all the things I had to deal with. It's a close one with the first (major) that I won (at the 1997 Masters).

"I dealt with a few things this week and just had to keep plugging along.

"I wasn't feeling my best, I didn't get off to the greatest of starts and when I finally got off to a good start (in the play-off) I screwed that up by finding the bunker on three."

Mediate battled back from three down after 10 holes of the play-off to go one up after 15, but Woods clawed it back - again needing a birdie on the last to take it to an extra hole for only the third time in US open history.

The 45-year-old runner-up said: "I think I had him a little scared. He said 'great fight' and that means the world to me."

Woods has now won 14 major championships - moved to within four major titles of Jack Nicklaus' all-time career record.
