Hamilton have been dealt a blow as James Gibson has been ruled out for the rest of the season, and the start of the next.

The 20-year-old defender suffered a cruciate-ligament injury in pre-season but had been close to a return to the action following an operation.

However, hospital scans showed that he had suffered a recurrence of the problem in training and will now be out of action until Christmas.

Boss Billy Reid said: "We're all gutted for James. It's a huge blow for him and the club.

"He was so close to playing for the first team again - in fact we could have put him in before now but wanted to make sure he was 100 per cent right.

"We did all the checks on him and were delighted with his progress but right at the end of a training session his knee buckled and the tests have shown that his cruciate has gone again. He'll miss pre-season and will probably be out until Christmas so that will be the last 18 months of his career he's lost to injury.

"For a young boy that's very hard to take but I saw enough of his character when he was coming back before to tell that he'll come through this."
