Celtic will lose out to Wigan in the race to sign Hamilton Academical midfielder James McCarthy, according to reports.
Roberto Martinez, who is due to be installed as new Latics boss early next week, is a big admirer of the 18-year-old starlet but ruled out a bid for him while in charge at Swansea because of a lack of funds.
However, he will now be in a position to make a realistic offer as Wigan boss and could pip SPL giants Celtic to his signature.
Ironically Celtic have already lost out to Wigan for Martinez's services and, while Bhoys chief executive Peter Lawwell continues his bid to replace Gordon Strachan, the Spaniard could make his move for McCarthy next week.
It is thought the youngster would prefer a move to Parkhead, but Celtic have failed to make a follow-up swoop having seen an initial offer of £400,000 spread over two payments rejected by the Hamilton chairman, Ronnie McDonald.
