Vicious Warrior gamely made virtually all the running to land the John Smith's Cask Stakes handicap at York.

The eight-year-old galloped on resolutely to win by three-quarters of a length from Efidium with Full Victory a neck back in third.

Jockey Dean McKeown was able to see off every challenger to the stallion home at odds of 10-1.

"He's a great character and wins a nice race every year. He loves soft ground now but when he was younger he hated it," said trainer Richard Whitaker.

"He's home bred. We've got the mare and the family, the half-brothers and the half-sisters. They all win races."

McKeown added: "You have to get the trip well today but the ground is not that bad. He goes on soft, but not heavy, and he kept going through it."
