Hull are still in the hunt to sign Aston Villa striker Darren Bent but Newcastle are reported to be in pole position to land him.
Villa are desperate to get the striker's reported £65,000 a week wages off the books and are ready to accept bids in the region of £5million, despite paying £24million when signing him from Sunderland.
The 29-year-old has been told by Villa boss Paul Lambert that he is no longer in his plans following the success of Christian Benteke, and he will be sold to the highest bidder.
Hull and Fulham are also said to be in the running. Tigers boss Steve Bruce is keen to be reunited with the player having signed him for Sunderland, while the Cottagers could offer him the chance to return to London.
However reports are claiming that Newcastle are favourites to land the former England international and hope to get a deal wrapped up sooner rather than later.
