Hull City boss Phil Brown insists his efforts to sign Newcastle's Michael Owen are real and not just a publicity stunt.

The England ace is on his way from St James' Park when his contract ends this week and Hull, along with Stoke City, are the most public of his suitors.

Brown though has denied that the efforts are just a publicity stunt to drum up interest in his club and he claims they are deadly serious about landing Owen on a £60,000 a week contract.

Brown said: "I have to emphasise this is not a publicity stunt or anything like that, we are deadly serious about bringing Michael to Hull. I think he is a reasonable man and just want the opportunity to speak to him to copnvince him that Hull is the right place to be.

"I will be patient and we also know Michael will have a lot to consider because there is bound to be a lot of interest in his services when his contract expires at Newcastle at the end of the month."
