Euro winners stay top of rankings

Intnl FootballEuro 2008 winners Spain remained at the top of FIFA's world rankings for a third month thanks to a 3-0 friendly win against Denmark.

The success in Austra and Switzerland in June and a following friendly win against the Danes meant the Spanish stayed ahead of world champions Italy and Euro 2008 runners-up Germany in the build up to the start of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers this week.

Despite being held to a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Austria, Italy moved into second place in the rankings, based on national team performances over the past four years. Germany were 2-0 winners over Belgium recently but slipped down to third after losing points overall.

The other big change saw Turkey jump above fellow Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia to clinch a spot in the top 10 for the first time in four years.

The best ranked non-European team is Brazil in sixth position followed by fellow South Americans Argentina one place behind.
