Terry worry for England

NewsJohn Terry's likely absence for England's World Cup qualifier with Kazakhstan on Saturday will mean a change of captain and personnel.

The Chelsea skipper failed to complete a training session on Wednesday because of a back complaint and early indications suggest the 27-year-old will not be risked for the Group Six date against the international lightweights.

Terry's absence is unlikely to sway patriot punters pondering a £25 free bet against a nation ranked 131 by world governing body Fifa in the latest rankings.

Terry, who suffered a recurrence of the complaint in Chelsea's Champions League tie against CFR Cluj last week, is also now an early doubt for next Wednesday's match against Belarus in Minsk, meaning Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is likely to be given the chance to lead out his country again.

Ferdinand can expect to be partnered in the middle by either Matthew Upson of West Ham or Joleon Lescott of Everton.

Emile Heskey also sat out training on Wednesday with a back problem and will continue to be assessed, while Ashley Cole, Wes Brown and Stewart Downing did all return after missing the previous day.

Fabio Capello is likely to resurrect the much-maligned central midfield partnership of Steven Gerrard with Frank Lampard, while Theo Walcott, who scored a memorable hat-trick against Croatia last month, should retain his place on the right

Heskey, if declared fit, should partner Wayne Rooney up front, although Capello does have the option of the recalled Peter Crouch.

Leaders England will be looking to build on their emphatic 4-1 win in Zagreb and enhance their qualifying credentials. A repeat of that scoreline cannot be dismissed against Kazakhstan, who crashed 3-1 on home soil against Ukraine on the same night.
