Jimmy Calderwood was relieved his Kilmarnock side avoided a Scottish Cup replay against Falkirk thanks to Manuel Pascali's late goal.

The Italian's scrappy 82nd-minute strike gave Calderwood his first win in charge and sealed Killie's place in the fifth round to set up a home meeting with Inverness.

The new boss admitted the goal has been fortunate as the ball bounced in off Pascali's knee after Gavin Skelton had struck the crossbar but he hopes it can be a turning point in Killie's season.

"The first goal was always going to be vital and we got it," Calderwood said. "I didn't think we were going to get it. It looked like we were going to have another game and that's the last thing we wanted.

"It was a good corner and came off the underside of the bar but Pascali got it in off his knee."

He added: "I didn't know a lot about it. Then I saw them jumping about. I couldn't see but it seemed like we had a bit of luck.

"Time will tell, but maybe that is the wee break we needed."
