Schalke have signed Brazil international Michel Bastos on an initial 18-month loan deal from French side Lyon
The versatile left-sided player will join the German side until the end of next season but the transfer could be made permanent should he impress in the Bundesliga.
Schalke, who lost Germany midfielder Lewis Holtby to Spurs earlier this week, have moved quickly to land 29-year-old Bastos.
"We're delighted that Michel Bastos is joining us," said Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt. "He's an internationally experienced player with the skills to improve our game immediately. He's also eligible to play in the Champions League."
Bastos, who has 10 caps for Brazil, has extensive experience in France and in the Champions League for Lyon and former club Lille.
He has scored a total of 26 goals for Lyon, including five in the first half of the current Le Champ campaign.
