Grimsby Town manager Mike Newell is closing in on a deal to sign Leeds United winger Peter Sweeney.

Sweeney finished last season on loan at Blundell Park and they are very keen to make the move a permanent one for the player who has just 12 months left on his present deal and is unlikely to feature for the club next season.

Newell said: "The chairman is working hard on that. We'll do everything possible to try and persuade the player that this is the place he should come to play."
