Aldridge - Suarez owes Reds

Former Liverpool star John Aldridge feels Luis Suarez owes the club for their staunch defence of him throughout the Patrice Evra affair

The Merseysiders have been unequivocal in their support of the Uruguayan, who was banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Evra in October.

The saga took another twist on Saturday when Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand ahead of the match between the sides at Old Trafford.

Suarez was made to apologise the next day for his actions, while Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish also had to apologise after he refused to condemn the forward in his post-match interview.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge believes Suarez needs to perform between now and the end of the season to repay the club for the damage the affair has done to their reputation.

"After what happened over the weekend, there are going to be question marks over the future of Luis Suarez at Liverpool FC," said the 53-year-old.

"In putting everything behind him and backing him to the hilt, Liverpool have tarnished their great name.

"Kenny Dalglish and Ian Ayre have stood right behind him and now Suarez needs to get back playing football and do his talking on the pitch.

"He needs to stay loyal to the club because Liverpool have remained loyal to him. We all want Suarez to show this by doing what he does best, terrorising defences and scoring goals."
