Benitez eyes Reds ace

Last Updated: Mon, 28 Oct 2013 12:11

According to reports in Italy, former Liverpool and current Napoli boss Rafael Benitez will make a move for Martin Skrtel in January.

The Spanish coach has been promised funds to spend on his team in the new year and is looking to take his former defender to Italy to strengthen their push for the Italian title.

Napoli have made a good start in Serie A under Benitez and sit in second place in the table three points behind early leaders Roma.

According to Italian publication Il Mattino, Benitez has identified Skrtel and Javier Mascherano of Barcelona as key targets ahead of the January transfer window but the Slovakia international has claimed he is settled at Anfield and not looking for a move.

In an interview two weeks ago, he told the Liverpool Echo: "After last season when I couldn't get into the team, this season has been very different so far.

"I am very happy. I am playing every game and trying to do my best for the team.

"Now I have to try to stay in the starting XI. It's up to me to keep proving to the manager that I deserve a place."
